Maude

Maude
In 1906, I was barely over fourteen years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She opened her mouth to say something, but then her face flushed, and she turned her head to look out the window. After a second, she squeezed my hand and looked back in my eyes. She said, “You’ve always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now, you’re going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?” I didn’t understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn’t have a choice, any more than I had a choice in being born

I was enthralled with this book. I am so glad you shared this, Ms. Mabrey. Not only is it a retelling of an interesting lifetime but it also gives firsthand insights into the Great Depression, women's suffrage, WW2, and how it affected American society. I commend Ms. Mabrey for her storytelling skills and will be reading more of her works. ETA: I noticed that this story is getting criticism for being 'depressing'...life was harder in a lot of ways for women back in those days and Maude didn't have as many options as we do now. When I was a child my grandparents shared stories with me about what life was like for them during the period that this book was written, i.e. making 50 cents a day as a farm laborer, living in a tent with three small children at nineteen years old, and it was a much tougher existence. Regarding her son who was obviously mentally ill, little support was offered back then as well. I think Maude did her best with the cards she was dealt. She obviously was a loving grandmother to her granddaughter

This book arms any physician with the evidence and tools they need to help patients who have had or at risk of having a stroke in preventing stroke.

Market / Audience
PRIMARY:

Neurologists (18,000 in US)

Cardiologists (30,000 in US)

SECONDARY:

Internists (200,00)

About the Book

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US (with cardiac disease and cancer being number one and two). Annually, 795,000 people in the US suffer a new or recurrent stroke. Approximately 140,000 people die from stroke each year, a figure that has been declining because of what we have learned about daily aspirin, smoking cessation, diet, and surgical procedures to prevent new or recurrent strokes.

The 6 million patients alive today who've survived stroke are at the highest risk, yet anyone of a certain age or who has had a "mini-storke," is at higher risk.

While more is known than ever about how to prevent stroke, there is still great variability in how stroke prevention is implemented regionally. Challenges in getting patients to comply with stroke prevention measures are also a concern.

This book provides an evidence-based approach and practical tools to help any physician help their patients avoid a new or a recurrant stroke.

Key Selling Features

  • Makes stroke prevention easy to teach, and easy to comply with.

Intellectual Property, Pharmaceuticals, and Public Health: Access to Drugs in Developing Countries Info

.

'Since the 1970s the pharmaceutical industry has undergone significant changes in its research and development paradigm, trade and production. Regulatory frameworks have also changed substantially, particularly in the area of intellectual property rights. This book provides much needed empirical evidence on the impact of these and other changes on the pharmaceutical sector and on access to medicines in developing countries. The studies, conducted with a common methodology, on nine developing countries (including major producers of pharmaceuticals such as China and India) and on Canada, make an outstanding contribution to the literature in the field. The data and analysis in the book are of immediate interest to policy makers and to scholars in various fields, including innovation economics, industrial policy, health systems and intellectual property.'
- Carlos Correa, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina

This up-to-date book examines pharmaceutical development, access to medicines, and the protection of public health in the context of two fundamental changes that the global political economy has undergone since the 1970s, the globalization of trade and production and the increased harmonization of national regulations on intellectual property rights.

With authors from eleven different countries presenting case studies of national experiences in Africa, Asia and the Americas, the book analyzes national strategies to promote pharmaceutical innovation, while at the same time assuring widespread access to medicines through generic pharmaceutical production and generic pharmaceutical importation. The expert chapters focus on patents as well as an array of regulatory instruments, including pricing and drug registration policies.

Presenting in-depth analysis and original empirical research, this book will strongly appeal to academics and students of intellectual property, international health, international political economy, international development and law.

Case Studies in Ethics and HIV Research La revue

.

This important work takes as its subject one of medicine’s most pressing arenas of ethical debate. There has been a consistent interest in ethical issues arising in the context of HIV research. Ongoing international and multi-site studies and the continuing search for an HIV vaccine continue to prompt examination of how this research is conducted. Also examined are how participants are engaged in the studies and the obligations of the researchers to individual participants and their communities during the course of and following the conclusion of the research. Each chapter of this book is authored primarily by one of the editors (secondarily by the other) and is accompanied by one to two case studies.

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE and AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY: Criminal Indifference to Cancer Prevention and Conflicts of Interest Info

.

Despite decades of false assurances, we are losing the winnable war against cancer. The hand-in-glove generals of the federal NCI and the "nonprofit" ACS have betrayed us. These institutions have spent tens of billions of taxpayer and charity dollars, promoting treatment, while ignoring strategies for preventing cancer, other than quitting smoking. As a result, cancer rates have escalated to epidemic proportions, now striking nearly one in two men and more than one in three women. Paradoxically and criminally, the more we spend on fighting cancer, the more cancer we get. And there is much more. The NCI and ACS are rife with conflicts of interest with the cancer drug industry. This book also details how the NCI and ACS are sitting on mountains of information on avoidable causes of cancer, while failing to act on this and making it available to Congress and the public. This book explains how we can win the war against cancer with strategies including "right-to-know" laws, ensuring public dissemination of critical information on avoidable causes of cancer, and Congressional reform to ensure that the NCI protects the public rather than special interests..
