In 1906, I was barely over fourteen years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She opened her mouth to say something, but then her face flushed, and she turned her head to look out the window. After a second, she squeezed my hand and looked back in my eyes. She said, “You’ve always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now, you’re going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?” I didn’t understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn’t have a choice, any more than I had a choice in being born

I was enthralled with this book. I am so glad you shared this, Ms. Mabrey. Not only is it a retelling of an interesting lifetime but it also gives firsthand insights into the Great Depression, women's suffrage, WW2, and how it affected American society. I commend Ms. Mabrey for her storytelling skills and will be reading more of her works. ETA: I noticed that this story is getting criticism for being 'depressing'...life was harder in a lot of ways for women back in those days and Maude didn't have as many options as we do now. When I was a child my grandparents shared stories with me about what life was like for them during the period that this book was written, i.e. making 50 cents a day as a farm laborer, living in a tent with three small children at nineteen years old, and it was a much tougher existence. Regarding her son who was obviously mentally ill, little support was offered back then as well. I think Maude did her best with the cards she was dealt. She obviously was a loving grandmother to her granddaughter

About the Authors

David Spence, MD

Trained in Neurology with Dr. Barnett before going on to complete training in Internal Medicine, and then a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at San Francisco. Has focused on stroke prevention throughout his career. Professor of Neurology and Clinical Pharmacology at the Robarts Research Institute, London, Canada. Ran a hypertension clinic for 20 years; for the past 15 years has run a busy stroke prevention clinic. Pioneered ultrasound measurement of carotid plaque for patient management, genetic research and evaluation of new therapies. Published in 2006 a book for the public; How to prevent your stroke. Wife and first son are family physicians; has done a lot of continuing medical education to family physicians around the world. Selected by the World Congress of Neurology in 2009 to teach the course on stroke prevention.

A giant in stroke prevention: first to show that Aspirin reduced the risk of stroke; led the study that showed that carotid endarterectomy reduced the risk of stroke in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis, and the study that showed that extra-cranial to intracranial bypass was not effective. Founding chair of the department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, in which Neurology and Neurosurgery joined to form a department separate from Medicine and Surgery. This model, which he pioneered with his neurosurgical colleague Charlie Drake, has been copied successfully the world over. i feel incredibly emotional about this book. it moves me, so i make no apologies for the strong feelings i have! i cried over it then and i can still cry now! this is a book we buy for ourselves. yes, we read it to our children but really we read it because it confirms to us, in just a few short words, just how absolutely we love and adore our children, so much more than they could ever imagine! my 3 children each have their own copy of this, bought when they were babies. my eldest is nearly 22. it's their keepsake book that they will, hopefully, read to their own children when the time comes, passing on the love that enveloped them when I read the book to them and then, then they will understand the enormity of the love that mothers and fathers have for their children. it is simple and it is beautiful. I would read it quietly at bedtime and I would read it animatedly during the day with the children trying to copy little nut brown hare's antics. even though they are sometimes cynical 16, 18 and 22 year olds we still do the "right up to the moon
